Choosing a floor for your garage, home or commercial space and wondering: epoxy resin or tiles? This is the most common question I hear from clients. In this article, I compare both solutions point by point, honestly and without sugarcoating.
| Criteria | Epoxy resin floor | Ceramic tiles / porcelain |
|---|---|---|
| Price (incl. installation) | from €65/m² | from €60, 120/m² |
| Installation time (40 m²) | 1, 2 days | 3, 7 days |
| Grout / joints | None, seamless surface | Yes, require cleaning |
| Impact resistance | High, flexible, won't crack | Medium, can crack |
| Chemical resistance | Very high (oils, acids) | Medium (grout absorbs) |
| Appearance | Modern, minimalist | Classic, wide pattern range |
| Repairs | Easy, local patch | Difficult, replace tile |
| Layer thickness | 2, 3 mm | 10, 15 mm (with adhesive) |
| Lifespan | 15, 25 years | 20, 30+ years |
| Underfloor heating | Ideal, thin layer | Good, but slower |
At first glance, tiles may seem cheaper, the material alone starts at €15, 30/m². But that's not the full picture.
Add adhesive (€5, 8/m²), grout (€2, 4/m²), primer (€2, 3/m²), trim strips (€4, 8/lm), plus 10, 15% waste. Then labour, from €30, 50/m². Real total cost: €60, 120/m².
My price includes materials, labour, surface preparation and final cleaning. No hidden costs. Garage floor from €65/m², interiors from €95/m². Only the substrate condition can raise the price.
💡 Summary: At comparable costs, epoxy gives you installation in 1, 2 days instead of a week, zero grout to clean, and a modern look.
Porcelain tiles are rock-hard, that's their biggest advantage. But they have a weakness: grout and cracks.
A dropped heavy object can crack a tile. Replacing one is a headache, chisel it out, clean the substrate, find an identical tile (often impossible years later), and relay it. Grout darkens, cracks, and collects dirt over time.
Epoxy flooring is flexible, it absorbs impacts instead of cracking. If scratches or damage occur, I repair locally without replacing the entire surface. Resistant to oils, petrol, automotive fluids, cleaning agents and acids.
Tiles offer a huge range of patterns, wood, concrete, marble, stone look. But you always see the grout lines.
Epoxy is one continuous surface with no breaks. The space looks larger and more modern. Available finishes: solid RAL colour, metallic 3D effects (swirl), and colour blends. Every metallic finish is absolutely unique.
Substrate prep, priming, adhesive, laying tiles, cutting, grouting, drying time. Plus noise, dust and mess.
Day one: diamond grinding and epoxy primer. Day two: resin pour and protective coat. Walkable after 24 hours. Less noise, less mess, less stress.
💡 Summary: Epoxy saves 3, 5 working days. During a renovation where every day counts, that's a huge difference.
Epoxy has no grout, and grout is the biggest hygiene problem with tiles. Grout collects dirt, mould and bacteria. Cleaning it requires special products and scrubbing.
Epoxy flooring is simply mopped with water and mild detergent. That's why it's popular in medical practices, beauty salons and restaurants.
In the garage, epoxy wins hands down. Engine oil, brake fluid, petrol, road salt, epoxy floor resists it all. Tiles in garages can crack from frost (unheated garages), grout absorbs oil, and heavy tools can damage them.
Garage floor price: from €65/m², comparable to good porcelain tiles, but with far better results.
Choose epoxy if: you like modern minimalism, want a seamless surface, have underfloor heating (epoxy conducts heat better thanks to 2, 3 mm thickness), or want a unique metallic/swirl effect.
Choose tiles if: you prefer traditional patterns, wood or stone look, or plan frequent design changes.
Interior price: from €95/m² (solid colour) or from €130/m² (metallic/swirl).
In commercial spaces, what matters is fast installation (less downtime), easy cleaning, and professional appearance. Epoxy delivers all three. Hair salons, clinics, offices, restaurants, showrooms, epoxy outperforms tiles everywhere.
Added bonus: epoxy can be refreshed (sand and recoat) without replacing the entire floor.
UV sensitivity, epoxy floors may yellow under prolonged sun exposure. For sunny rooms, I use UV-resistant polyurethane systems.
Substrate requirements, the substrate must be dry, stable and properly prepared. That's why I always inspect before quoting.
Gloss can be slippery, high-gloss finish can be slippery when wet. For bathrooms and entrances I recommend matte or satin finish.
Not a DIY job, requires professional equipment and experience.
Garage, workshop, warehouse → Epoxy. No debate.
Modern interior, loft, minimalism → Epoxy.
Commercial space → Epoxy (fast install + hygiene).
Traditional interior, classic style → Tiles.
